Hawaiian Football joins CONIFA
WAILUKU, MAUI – On November 28, 2019 – in commemoration of Lā Kūʻoko‘a (Hawaiian Independence Day) – the Confederation of Independent Football Associations (CONIFA) announced its newest member: Hui Kanaka Pōwāwae (the Hawaiian Football Federation). HKP is the first national organization to govern associated football (“soccer”) in all its forms, within the Hawaiian Islands.
CONIFA is a global acting nonprofit organization – for football associations outside of FIFA – that supports international football teams from nations, de-facto nations, regions, minority peoples and sports isoloated territories. CONIFA’s Executive Committee unanimously approved HKP’s application for membership on November 27, 2019. Formal acceptance was confirmed by vote on January 25 at CONIFA’s Annual General Meeting held at Saint Helier, Jersey – along with the membership of West Papua, Mapuche, Crimea, Elba Island, and Rapa Nui.
Founded on the core principle that the Hawaiian Islands is a sovereign nation-state in continuity, under prolonged occupation by the United States, HKP was formed to create a space where one can contribute to the revival of Hawaiian National consciousness through its men’s, women’s, and youth national teams. It’s vision is to showcase its National Teams as a modern symbol of aloha ‘āina (Hawaiian “patriotism”); and to play an instrumental role in shaping Hawaiian national identity.
We have now moved onto CONIFA membership and, following a vote in the room, West Papua, Mapuche, Hawaii, Crimea, Elba Island and Rapa Nui have joined as member FAs.
