Hilo Training Camp
HILO, HAWAI‘I – In late June, Nā ‘Ālapa Hawai‘i concluded the last of three training camps held in 2023. In addition to the 18 Kāne and Wāhine National Teams, more than 30 Kanaka pool players from across Hawai‘i Island squared off in a practice match on day 2 of camp.
Hilo Hanakahi holds a very special place in the mo‘okū‘auhau or genealogy of Hui Kanaka Pōwāwae. The first-ever scouting event for Nā ‘Ālapa Hawai‘i was held back in 2021 at the Bayfront Soccer Fields in Hilo.
While in Hilo, the teams also underwent vigorous cultural training at Hale ‘Ōlelo under Kumu Pelehonuamea Harman and her brother Manu Suganuma. Kumu Pele led players in mele, oli, and ho‘olauna, while ‘Anakala Manu – who currently resides in Aotearoa – introduced players to the customs and traditions of the Māori people.
